Can food become an addiction?

Many people have asked this question before. Is there such a thing called food addiction or can food be addictive? The simple answer is absolutely yes! However, food addiction is growing rapidly and the worst part of this addiction that it hasn’t been taken seriously, based on the concept that “food” is a not drugs or alcohol. But the fact is, regardless what the substance is, it is an addiction as long as you crave it. Therefore, food can be addictive. Many people nowadays are addicted to food unknowingly or unintentionally. The risks of this addiction is devastating based on the growing obesity, diseases, cancers and deaths the world is facing in relation to food addiction and over-eating especially the junk type of food.

What is an addiction?
Generally an addiction is referred to any act or behavior someone does which he/she has no control over or can lose control in managing it. Usually there are consequences for addictions and these may vary depending on the type of the addiction.
According to the medical-dictionary as well as mainstream psychology, “an addiction is an act of persistent, compulsive and dependence on a behavior or substance”. In another word and relating to food, any dependence on substance/s to include mood-altering behaviors and can be abused is considered an addiction. Those types of mood-altering substances can be easily found in our foods today such as sugar, salt and fat.
Mainstream psychology speaks of two types of addictions, Substance Addictions such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking. And Process Addictions such as gambling, spending, shopping, eating etc.
The definition of addiction above as well as most of mainstream psychology and behavioral science categorizes the eating addiction as in “Process Addictions”, but the fact is that food addiction can be also on the same level as alcohol and drugs category “Substance Addictions”. It’s true there are some minor differences but they also share lots similarities especially the addictive substances in food such as sugar, salt and fat.

The bottom line is that food can become an addiction when the act of eating is abused. It isn’t easy to avoid eating since almost every food product contains such addictive substances (sugar, salt and fat), but certainly eating can be managed in a healthy balanced portions and with knowledge and awareness.

Luck vs. Opportunities

Do you consider yourself lucky? If the answer is “yes” it means you really are lucky for ending up here reading this page, and if the answer is “no” most likely you won’t be here or you won’t read this whole article and you’ll just move on to do something else.

Certainly luck exists, maybe not in the form of coincidental chances but in the form of awareness. Usually people who consider themselves lucky are leaders and achievers. A lucky person is usually an open minded person when it comes to opportunities and he/she notices them regardless the significance of the opportunities. On the other hand, people who consider themselves unlucky they usually are unable to see the opportunities and that will cause them to miss out on the opportunities even if they are right in front of them because they are focusing on looking for something specific. For example, a person considers himself unlucky goes to the market looking for one item in particular, all his focus will be on that particular item which will cause him to miss too many other things could even have a better value than what he was looking for. While a lucky person is more relaxed and open minded, always has one eye on what he’s seeking and the other eye on other opportunities even the potential ones.

Luck is not something you wait for, it’s something you make! Opportunities are all around you, all you need is just to see them, identify them and act quickly.

Things will help you to enhance your awareness to be luckier (to see more opportunities);

  • You need to stop the unhealthy criticism. Don’t waste your time on criticizing things and waste your time/energy on criticism which will cause you to miss out on many different opportunities that could be right before your eyes but you’re unable to see them because you’re busy criticizing or looking for something specific. For example, you go to a party and spend the whole time criticizing the food, people, music etc., the result is you’ve missed out on the whole party and meeting new people. One of those new people might have had a better opportunity for you, but surely you missed out because you were too busy criticizing or looking for a specific thing.
  • You need to go further in life and you have to learn how to take risks; don’t be afraid to try new things. Try different things and if what you do isn’t working that means you better change the way you do it.
  • You need to learn to foresee the opportunities; it’s not winning the lotto because you might have to wait for the rest of your life and maybe another ten more lives! It’s about changing your outlook on things, especially looking outside your comfort-zone. Everything comes with time and experience, such as a real-estate agent knows when the good time to buy and sell properties, the agent studied the market along with other studies to enable him/her to minimize on making mistakes (bad luck)
  • Be an alchemist, of course not in the form of transforming led into gold but metaphorically. You need to learn how to transform negative into positive or (someone’s loss into your gain), that only happens when you have an open mind, open senses and willing to perceive and embrace other opportunities even if they are not what you expected.
  • The only way to create more opportunities is when you share what you have even on a minor level, the more you share the more will return to you. Remember, the opportunities you’re seeing and getting are what other people are sharing with the rest of the world! The word “Luck” is used in the Western World but in the East it’s called “Karma”.

Celebrate your luck, it is very important to celebrate your success with yourself and others, that will help you to believe more in yourself and as you’re lucky (open minded for opportunities) which will lead to point number one on this list. The more you believe in something the more it will manifest in reality.

Losing weight v/s getting rid of weight

I’m sure you’ve heard of the “Yo-Yo Diet” before which is first explained by Prof. Kelly D. Brownell at Yale University. The definition of the Yo-Yo Diet is when people try to lose weight and then they regain the same weight back which they worked hard to get rid of. The Yo-Yo Diet is caused by many factors and a major one is psychological rather than physical.

One of the major psychological factors of the Yo-Yo diet is that the subconscious mind takes everything literally and seriously based on its role, and generally because it doesn’t think or analyze (that’s the conscious mind role). Therefore, the subconscious mind only does things as in “by commands”!
Think of it this way, the subconscious mind is like the Aladdin’s lamp or better known as the Genie in the bottle. The genie’s job is only to preform and manifest your commands, not to think of what you command him! So, whether you say I want lots of money or I want to be poor, the genie will grant you your commands without thinking of what your commands are. The same goes with the subconscious mind, it doesn’t think but it only acts.
That’s why you must be careful of what you say to yourself, if you say I’m ugly or fat the subconscious mind will act as “your wish (suggestion) is my command” and you’ll become as you suggested for or onto yourself. So, you better speak highly of yourself to yourself or don’t say anything if you have nothing positive to say to yourself.

Back to the Yo-Yo Diet, when people say I want to lose e.g. 30 pounds of weight; they maybe will and they might also put those pounds back on because the suggestion (command) used was “lose”. What do you do when you lose something?! You look everywhere for it to get it back and put it back where it was. The same thing goes with the subconscious mind, you lost 30 pounds, your subconscious mind will look everywhere for it to make you put it back on because its job to protect you and what belongs to you. You may be thinking “but the subconscious mind should know that extra weight is making me sick”! Well, no! Because its job is not to think and it doesn’t think or calculate, it’s just a memory storing department and a very powerful influence on your being.

The solution is to say “I will get rid of the access or unnecessary weight”. That’s much safer to say and has a SMART Goal plan such as how much weight you want to get rid of. Also, the subconscious mind doesn’t like the word “diet” because it has the word “die” in it! You can use words such as “eating healthier or eating smarter, eating better etc.) Remember, the subconscious mind doesn’t take negative suggestions and the word “die” most likely is negative to the majority of people and that’s a reason why people will drift away from diet every time they say the word “diet” because the subconscious mind will do the opposite of a negative suggestion!

Now you know that you have to start treating yourself better because you know that your subconscious mind is recording everything you’re saying and thinking about yourself and others. Everything will be taken literally and acted upon accordingly. So, think it right, say it right and do it right!
